Gene Wolfe has crafted something very unique in The Shadow of the Torturer and yet it is just the beginning of his magnificent work. It defies classifcation and transcends tacky labels, it is multilayered, ingenious, thoughtful, and seductive. It is a book that can be read again and again such is its richness.
