Somerset Maugham's (25 January - 16 December ) twenty novels are exceptionally uneven; the first eight, though interesting, suggest the efforts of a young novelist to discover where his talent lies. From the publication of Of Human Bondage () through The Razor's Edge (), he produced his most significant prose works. About Of Human Bondage. W. Somerset Maugham's masterwork is the coming-of-age story of Philip Carey, a sensitive young man consumed by an unrequited and self-destructive love. Born with a clubfoot, Philip is orphaned as a child and raised by unsympathetic relatives. Sent to a boarding school where he has difficulty fitting in, he grows up.


The title reminds me of Beverly Nichols' book, A Case of Human Bondage. A Tragically Twisted Marriage of W. Somerset Maugham, published in I haven't read it, but it is supposed to be very damning on Maugham. Of Human Bondage is widely regarded as Somerset Maugham's best work and I'm inclined to agree from the novels I have read of his so far. It was written in but is set around about the turn of the twentieth century for the most part when the second Boer war was being fought () evoking a vibrant picture of how life was in those long gone days.
